Former Sen. John Edwards meets with ACORN members in Bridgeport, Conn. July 10 on his “Half in Ten” campaign tour to cut poverty by 50 percent in a decade. After attending a closed meeting with Houston ACORN leaders and elected officials July 23, former Sen. John Edwards said he would fight “with every fiber of my being” to end poverty in America. Edwards has also announced anti-poverty plans with ACORN members in Denver, Los Angeles and Connecticut on his “Half in Ten” campaign tour.
Edwards is touring the United States as chairman of the Half in Ten campaign, with the goal of reducing poverty by half within a decade. Half in Ten is an initiative of ACORN, the Center for American Progress Action Fund (CAPAF), the Coalition on Human Needs (CHN), and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR).
Edwards joined Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa July 21 in announcing a $100 million affordable housing fund. The New Generation Fund is designed to combat homelessness and reduce the housing burden on poor and working families by offering affordable housing developers early-stage financing for properties intended for low- and moderate-income residents.
Los Angeles ACORN members facing foreclosure, eviction, sky-high rents and source of income discrimination testified at the press conference with Edwards.
“Half in Ten is about working together on a real plan to reduce and eliminate poverty in communities all across the country,” said Los Angeles ACORN member and single mother Donna Rodriguez, who pays 50 percent of her income in rent. “Today we highlighted a huge piece of the puzzle – the housing crisis – and announced one concrete step that will have a big local impact in providing new affordable housing.”
In Hartford on July 10, Edwards said that Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell was “wrong” to veto a raise in that state’s minimum wage after meeting with ACORN members. Raising both state and federal minimum wages is another key step in the Half in Ten campaign.
Face Fwd Comments:
I find it funny that Half in Ten and ACORN cannot find anyone other than John Edwards to rep for them. Could they pick anyone less relavant or more disliked in the public eye than a man who cheated on his wife, fatherd a “love” child, botched the cover up, and embarrassed his wife publicly. Did I mention she was undergoing Chemotherapy for cancer at the time? This is the guy that wants to tell us to give our precious tax monies up to a group of people who have plenty of time to volunteer, but apparantly litle time to work. John, would you please just go away, and take ACORN and HIT with you.
Here are the stated goals of the Half in Ten organization
Child Care
Child Tax Credit
Earned Income Tax Credit
Foreclosure Prevention
Green Buildings and Green Jobs
Minimum Wage
Unemployment Insurance
Sadly no mention of GETTING ANYONE A JOB. Don’t let the Green Jobs line fool you. They are talking about giving people money to retrofit thier homes to be more green. If I understand the goals of the organization as stated above and the sponsors below, it’s not about ending poverty by giving people jobs to help them, it’s about taking money from the tax paying, American public and passing it out to the people that work for or are supporters of ACORN.

It is natural for a person to care for themselves and to work, however, individuals can be trained to do otherwise. As proof, look at the current welfare system. The things that John Edwards and his supporters talk about have been tried in this country since the first organized colonies. In modern times FDR had the same goals but failed. LBJ created, “The Great Society” and not only did it fail to get people out of poverty it actually imprisoned them as generations of people have forgotten how to live without government assistance.
Many conservatives have steered clear of the subject and have chosen to avoid confronting ACORN and their stated goals. They do not want to seem indifferent to the needs of others. I say, take ACORN and the rest of the liberals head on. If ACORN and the others want to help the low/no income people (as I do) then let’s put them to work. If you want to talk about compassion, then talk about the generations of people that live on government assistance because they no longer know how to take care of themselves. Of all the human injustices in this country, taking a person’s self value and keeping them on the government leash is the worst.

Work........So natural a caveman could do it
