Inhofe Asks Boxer to Investigate Possible Scientific ‘Conspiracy’ in ‘Climategate’
Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, is calling on Chairman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) to conduct hearings on a possible conspiracy between some of the world’s most prominent climatologists to, among other things, manipulate data on so-called global warming.
Inhofe said the recent disclosure of emails between several prominent climatologists reveal “possible deceitful manipulation of important data and research used by the US Global Change Research Program” and the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.”
He suggested “a possible conspiracy by scientists, some of whom receive or have received US taxpayer funds, to stifle open, transparent debate on the most pressing issues of climate science.”
Inhofe also noted that there appeared to be “a campaign to vilify scientists who question global warming alarmism.”

Boxer Says Senate Will ‘Follow the Science’ on Global Warming Legislation
Democratic members of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee have pledged to “follow science” in their quest to quell the effects of global warming, even as some reports suggest that belief in the environmental threat is waning.
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), the committee chair, told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference Tuesday that Democrats on the committee are writing a global warming bill that she says will not only preserve the environment, but also help remedy the nation’s economic problems.
“Don’t allow talk of an economic recession to stop our work,” Boxer said. “The surest way to create good jobs in this country is to mobilize for clean energy.”
Boxer said she does not agree with economists who say taxes are the most effective way to reduce carbon emissions.
She reaffirmed support for a cap-and-trade emissions system, though there is disagreement on the committee regarding whether that is the best option, she said.
“We’re working, let’s be clear, on cap-and-trade programs,” Boxer said. “The whole world is doing cap-and-trade, so we need to be consistent.”

White House Dismisses ‘Climategate’ Because ‘Most People’ Believe in Global WarmingTuesday, December 01, 2009
As President Barack Obama prepares to travel to a global climate summit next week in Copenhagen, the White House is dismissing the “climategate” controversy that has arisen over the leak of email communications between top climate-change scientists that some skeptics say cast doubt on the legitimacy of the science behind the theory that human activity is causing global warming.
Obama will be attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference on Dec. 9. The conference in Copenhagen comes soon after the emails released by a computer hacker has led one Republican U.S. senator to call for an investigtation.
Some global warming skeptics have referred to the e-mails–from the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit in England–as “climategate.”
But White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs dismissed the controversy on Monday, saying that most people don’t dispute global warming.
“In the order of several thousand scientists have come to the conclusion that climate change is happening,” Gibbs said. “I don’t think that any of that is, quite frankly among most people, in dispute.”
